In drag

At the museum we are getting ready for the annual benefit auction on March 10th. Since I work on the north shore of Long Island, this is Real Money. Do you remember Thurston Howell III from Gilligan's Island? Well that's actually how they talk here.

I want to honor their culture and their happiness, so I have to find something to wear. I think it was Gloria Steinem who wrote the brilliant sentence, "Femininity is women in drag." I just feel silly in everything I try on.

Caroline, your latest art is fantastic. The look on your face in these drawings is priceless.

I rarely have to dress in anything other than jeans and boots, but I feel like an imposter when I do.

I have no advice for you, because I have no fashion sense at all. In fact, I'd probably be a good candidate for TLC's "What Not to Wear". But with your artistic eye, I think you will find just the right thing for the event.

Caroline, I love that you found "you" in wild & sassy! That is just the coolest and I bet you're going to knock 'em dead.

Getting dressed up usually brings me to tears, I have yet to find my style, my look in any way. I'm so glad you have found yours, it really suits you!

Fabulous illustrations too, you are so talented!

I feel your north shore pain! I love these illustrations, I love the way you depict yourself almost too scared to show yourself in shockingly trendy.

since I live my life in jeans or in summer a skirt - and I am not one who "dolls up"...this type of thing would surely give me pause too. The thing is you can never go wrong with the little black dress...understated yet elegant...the right accessories and you're good to go. Although it would be WAY more fun to go SASSY of course, lol!
"OH lovey"....hahhaha
Good luck, let us know what you decide! and as always LOVE the illos!

When I saw Dar Williams last week, she did a very funny monologue all about her friend in Vermont who gets all dressed up and then puts on her wool socks and hiking boots. I can totally relate!

If I had an opportunity to REALLY dress up (w/o the hiking boots) -- oh, I don't know, I'd think Annette Bening at the Oscars. She's so classy and beautiful.

I also like the classic black cocktail dress with pearls -- but you'd have to make absolutely sure that you don't look like Barbara Bush!!! (EEEuuwwww, my skin crawls, just thinking about it.)

What you didn't include was something that looks a little like Cher -- you know, the cut out diamond from cleavage to navel. THAT would turn the heads of the Thurston Howell the Thirds. (Wasn't her name "Lovey"?

Oh, yeah. "Lovey." I should have read the other comments more closely!

Hey, a few more mice like the one Tarzan dragged in the other day, and you could stitch together a lovely fur stole to wear! ("My dear, WHERE did you get that EXTRAORDINARY chinchilla?")

oh my, what wonderful drawings! You amaze me Caroline!!! I love them all. Finding the right thing to wear really can be a tough one, I wish you the best of luck and remember - never wear shoes for the first time to out, make sure you give 'em a good test run first.

I actually do wear my boots everywhere myself though :)

I think you could get something from Eileen Fisher....dress it up and come across as the sophisticated but simple (as in not frou-frou) gal that you seeem to be! Check out Eileen
(sorry for the commercial...I don't even own stock!)
Your illustrations are just divine, darling!

Awesome drawings, "Lovie." I'd put an exclamation point after that, but Thurston never would.
I like Wild and Sassy, solid colors with flared pants are trendy and a sequined jacket adds pizzaz. Of course I just love sequins! And live in jeans...oh well.

OMG - I am rolling around the floor in laughter... those drawings are amazing.. I know just how you feel, I am a jeans and tee girl most of the time, unless i have my hippy hat on and when I have to go somewhere 'posh' and get all dressed up, I feel like a little girl playing dress ups..
by the way - I would go with shockingly trendy - it looks like a pixie outfit - love it!

Wild and sassy is SO it!

I love your drawings. These are SO fun and I hope you got as much joy out of doing them as I got out of looking!

I hate having to dress for a particular type of crowd ... and it's actually fun to tweak it a bit by wearing something a bit "off". I know your wonderful love of life shone through no matter what you wore.
BTW: thanks for your comment about the structure of my blog...I put a lot of thought and decision into that.
